It is essential to have a guiding light, a glowing beacon, a steady compass for riding out the ebb and flow of life. There are many different rays of light and mixtures of light that guide and help us through a given moment or choice. The examples set by parents, the love and admiration of sons and daughters, passion, faith, and truth are a few of the landmarks that bring navigation ease to the la grande traversée of life.

Starting a business requires some thought about guiding lights. Identifying the specific signals that your business emanates out into the world will aid in guiding it to success. They are lifelines to rely on, refer to, and grasp onto at every turn. So, what exactly are the strands of light that pierce every client connection, every business relationship and communication, and every moment spent in creation and completion of the work?
As the single soul plotting the course of this business and steering it forward, this is the ultimate question, and in the answer is the essence of why my business exists, the gauge for predicting the connections it attracts, and the undercurrent for bringing meaning to the work.
Of the three beacons I have identified for my business, kindness is the true north. Without kindness the other signals dim and fade away. There’s a reason “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is the golden rule. Why acts of kindness can change a life or even change the world. Kindness matters, and it touches everything. It isn’t only a part of interactions with others, but it extends to the work and is evident in the work as tasks are completed with greater attention and gratitude.
In the virtual assistance business, helpfulness casts the brightest light. Being helpful and assisting is a comfortable place for me, it’s a core motivation and the ethereal reward for doing the work. Helpfulness is a common strand connecting all my work experience. Aspiring to make valued contributions to a defined goal is a natural tendency, an inclination that exists without effort.
And finally, enjoyment eases the ship to shore. Joy in my work is essential, and virtual assistance brings a mixture of life joys into my workspace. Learning new things, creating, variety of duty, and exercising resourcefulness are all sources of enjoyment, and freedom from a by-the-clock schedule and a location anchor add to the fun.
Three common nouns that guide my business: kindness, helpfulness, and enjoyment. Simple words that illuminate a purpose and extend a glow to catch the eye of those in need of my services. They bring ease to my path and prevent me from drowning in the waves.
What are the beacons that guide your business? Whether you’re an experienced business owner or just starting the journey, take the time to identify the brightest lights of your business and always keep them in your sites. They will buoy your ship and offer smooth sailing even in rough waters.
