Lofty goals are worthy and admirable, life changing and history making. Some people think them up, commit to them, manage them and accomplish them, even when there’s no clear path in existence. Like that train track built through the Semmering section of the Alps, envisioned by a lofty goal-setter before a train was invented that could make the steep climb. President Kennedy propelled a nation to the moon by saying the right words and backing them up. That has to be among the loftiest of goals in history, right? Sending a man to the moon in the 1960s with expectations of gathering moondust? Was “computer” even a word then? I don’t know, but I do know that if I had been president at the time, it would never even have occurred to me to set such a goal. (Pausing to acknowledge with gratitude and admiration those who set no limits on goals and process the guts and know-how to follow through.)

Though lofty goals are not a part of my genetic makeup, I am a champion at accomplishing those that are more down to earth. From the goals I’ve set for my life to the daily goals I’ve set on the job or personally, I get excited about setting and achieving them. Even the smallest of goals accomplished feels rewarding to me. From the common wins to life accomplishments, all have added value to my life, secured my contentment and helped ensure my needs are met.

Setting your sights on new heights is important, and doing what it takes to get it done can be an adventure. As you look across the mountainscape, be true to yourself about the mountains you want to scale and the motivation you have to get there. Think about the timeline, the steps to take and the obstacles to overcome. If you want to accomplish something in the next fifteen minutes, then get off your bum and do it. If it requires days, months, or years, break down the steps and take it one day at a time. Expect barriers, learn what you don’t know, and observe! Reframe making comparisons to making observations. Your attention is on others for a reason, so lean in. Bring those envious attributes into your atmosphere, stop for a deep inhale, then propel forward.

Starting a heart-based business and thriving within it is a mountaintop goal for me. I can visualize what the view will look like when I get there, and it motivates me. Freedom to work from anywhere while doing rewarding work that suits my skill set and talents. Being supportive and helpful to others as they work toward their goals. Endless opportunity to learn and to connect with interesting, mindful people. This adventure is very exciting as I move along my timeline, accomplishing goals and giving myself space to correct mistakes and feel the joy. With consistent achievement and a clear view, I feel as if the mountaintop, and even a pinch of moondust, is possible.

If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time. – Zig Ziglar
